GoodFellas, the Godfather, Start Wars, Lock-stock and two smoking barrels. What am I on about, you say? Classics! …And just like your movie collection, there are certain wardrobe pieces that are as essential to your wardrobe as De Niro is to a Scorsese film. These bad boys have stood the test of time and are as interchangeable with the rest of you wardrobe as your undies.
The one piece that says “I know what I’m doing” even when you really have no idea. Other than the black-tie, this blazer stands the test of every occasion and works just as good on a night out as it does in the office. For a smart-casual play, pair it with a white oxford shirt, stone or tan chinos, and a pair of brown derbys. For a night out on the town, dress the blazer down with a pair of washed denims, crew neck T and a clean pair of white sneakers. And, Finally, for the Love of God, please don’t confuse the navy blazer with a navy suit separate jacket… A Blazer is made of a thicker fabric than suit jackets and pairs better with other clothing items of different weights. A Suit Jacket should only be paired with suits. Period.
Oh so much to say about this beautiful pieces of clothing, so little time. First, we’re in the UAE. We can pull this puppy off all year long. And we’re not talking about your everyday polo here. No, these polo shirts should be a knit and, because of their slim cut, are great to dress up. Differentiate your office look by pairing them with a blazer and chino combination.
Come on boys, this one is easy. If you don’t have one of these in your wardrobe, you’re probably living at home with moms... Scratch that, even your moms will want you to have one of these. They’re versatile, comfortable and one of the more durable items you’ll have in your closet. Our favorite? We have many, but one style that goes a long way, is the classic oxford. They look great on every body type and pair easily with rest of your wardrobe. One question our stylists frequently get asked is in regard to tucking. As a general rule of thumb, if the length of the shirt is longer than your average polo or t-shirt, it’s best to keep it tucked. Pay attention to the shirt’s hem. If it’s even all the way around, then it’s ok to untuck – otherwise, play safe, and keep it tucked.
Smarter than jeans and more comfortable than formal trousers, chinos are a great way to add range to your wardrobe. Best yet, due to their soft, worn-in cotton fabric, they breath easier in hotter climates. UAE summers anyone? Our two favorite colors are Tan and Navy and for, the most part, love them cuffed just below the ankle – right at the shoe.
Raw, versatile and distinguished, a great pair of dark washed denim give you a bit of edge while still looking sharp. They work for almost every occasion, but do avoid wearing them to smart formal events. Obviously, our favorite shades are on the darker end of the wash spectrum, but that’s for good reason. They’re a great wash on everybody, do a great job of hiding skinny or thicker legs and look great dressed up or down. They’re just as great with t-shirts and sneakers as they are with a light grey blazer, white shirt and black wing-tip combination.
The traditional punch hole design on this silhouette’s upper – known as brogueing – gives this shoe it’s distinctive character that other smart shoe styles lack. Originating in the marsh conditions of Scotland, they were initially designed with holes in the shoe to drain out the water for workers in the mines and fields. How’s that for some history? Traditionally, brogues are less formal than oxfords so can be considered for more laid back work environments. We recommend a dark brown paired with our other wardrobes essentials of navy or tan chinos, white oxford shirt, and navy blazer.
